  1. Common Redpoll

    Common Redpoll

There were good numbers of these smart little "northern" visiting these public feeders during a rare winter family visit to Ottawa. Although the same species occurs in Europe they rarely get as bright and well marked as some in North America (this individual was particularly eye-catching).
  2. Evening Grosbeak

    Evening Grosbeak

We were lucky enough to see good numbers of these spectacular but rapidly declining finches (including this very smart male) during a rare winter family visit to Ottawa. It was a particularly good winter for Evening Grosbeak in the area with nearly 40 individuals using these feeders.
  3. Red-necked Phalarope

    Red-necked Phalarope

One of half a dozen or so juvenile birds seen during my fall 2019 family visit. Normally quite uncommon (rare?) going through Ottawa on migration but this was a particularly good year for them.
  4. White-breasted Nuthatch

    White-breasted Nuthatch

A common bird locally and at this site used to picking up bird seed if you hold some out on your hand. I thin this one from my annual family visit to Canada in fall 2023 was eyeing me up in the hope of getting fed! Very endearing little guys - and keep you entertained when otherwise the...
  5. Bonaparte's Gull

    Bonaparte's Gull

Adult in winter plumage. This was the sole Bonaparte's Gull with a large congregation of mostly Ring-billed Gulls and a few American Herring Gulls.
  6. Swamp Sparrow

    Swamp Sparrow

Quite common and widespread sparrow usually favouring wet locations (marshes, wet woodland etc). Quite secretive - more often seen than heard but can sometimes show well.
  7. Eastern Screech-Owl

    Eastern Screech-Owl

Red morph - something of a rarity in this part of Ontario (all my previous sightings have been Grey morph). Found during my 2023 fall visit and showed (sometimes with a Grey morph bird) well off and on during the day and evening becoming a very well watched bird by birders, photographers and...

Can not identify Bird Song recorded in Erin Ontario Canada

On a few occasions I have heard a strange sounding bird call/song coming from deep in my backyard forest. Until this past weekend, I was not able to actually spot this bird but was able to record its' song/call (it's more of a three note call with two variations) with my Iphone, on a couple of...
  9. cw.jpeg

    cw.jpeg

I have been looking to take a picture of this bird for so long. Finally this morning I saw it elegantly towering on the top of a tree. It was pretty far, but I was super excited. Here you go: Cedar Waxwing, the Diabolik of birds.

    Mallard nest help!

Hello! I am new here and apologize if I am posting in the wrong place. I am trying to find some information on Mallard ducks and their nesting habits. I live in Ontario, Canada. I have had the same hen nest in the same spot in my backyard for at least the past 4 to 5 springs. She has always...

    Crow Or Raven?

These 2 fellows came by for an afternoon preen in the Maple tree. Id appreciated as they looked a bit large to bee crows.

Great Great Owl At Tommy Thompson Park (aka The Leslie Street Spit)

A number of years ago Great Grey Owls came to Tommy Thompson park. Apparently, there was a shortage of food up north that winter and we got lucky. Unfortunately, my first digital camera had a horrible zoom, so this is the best photo I could get.
  17. Squirrel Not Bird

    Squirrel Not Bird

This is the reason I put the bungee cords over the birdfeeder.
