    Nikon P5100

Roy, I'm thinking of getting one of the newer cameras myself as I'm in Tokyo at the moment. I'm leaning towards the Panasonic LX3 or the Canon S90 (I'll use with the UCA adapter). To use on the Swaro DCA adapter though the Nikon P5100 is the most flexible or the newer P6000. I like the...

    Nikon P5100

Ray, I'm glad your having fun with digiscoping again. Now lets hope the pollution goes away to give us some clean air. Neil.

    Nikon P5100

With the P6000 it's Raw and the Remote setting. It could be Interval Timer but best to do a RESET ALL functions and reload your favorites. Neil.

    Nikon P5100

Nice for the distance. I use the MF feature with the A590 and A640 as it's hard to see the screen well enough to judge focus. With dragonflies I normally focus on the perch. You can check the extra focus needed by focusing on a stationary subject with the scope, attaching the camera and...

    Nikon P5100

Some vignetting need not be a bad thing. In digiscoping the local birds coming down to water I have to set the P6000 (similar to P5100) to wide zoom which gives me a sharp vignetting circle . I do this as I want to keep some space around the bird as they don't stay in the same place for very...

    Nikon P5100

The cameras can still show the AF is locked even when not in focus. The further the distance and the more you zoom the camera lens is the more errors in focus will creep in. The way to improve the number of sharp images is to focus on the bird's legs/rock/branch and not it's body. Sometimes the...

    Nikon P5100

I use third party adapters for all my cameras ( usually available in HK before the originals ) http://www.adorama.com/INKURA5.html Neil.

    Nikon P5100

Dennis, The P5100 will do a good job on most scopes and eyepieces with the 52 mm third party adapter. The P6000 behaves similarly but has RAW and wider lens. You can find a 52 mm third party adapter for it too. Neil.

    Nikon P5100

Chris, The DCB is a fine piece of engineering but you don't need it with the P5100 as you can fit an adapter to the camera which works with the DCA adapter. http://www.opticsplanet.net/swdcadiadfor.html A much simpler connection. If you are getting the DCB thrown in with the price...

    Nikon P5100

B, Very nice photos. Your camera problem sounds like a technical fault. I've never had this with a Nikon camera. You don't have a magnet close to the camera do you. Also is your battery ok? Neil

    Nikon P5100

Perry, If you go to Set-up on the Mode Dial and to AUTO OFF you can change the setting to 30 mins. It does chew up batteries faster though. For Focus set Aperture Priority and Macro Mode (green zone ) and manually focus the scope to get close. Using INFINITY FOCUS is difficult...

    Nikon P5100

Nice one Ray. I've done this with my Canon adapters. It makes a big difference for the A640 and A650. Neil.

    Nikon P5100

Rick, Thanks for the links. I wish I had the money at the moment to get the G10 and the LX3 as they come up well. I have been very impressed with images coming out of digicams for some some time, from the Fuji F30 onwards. I have taken the Ricoh GX100 to Egypt...

    Nikon P5100

Rich, I also still have trouble with the manual focusing, although it is much better with the newer cameras that have Liveview. I like to have a day out with just the scope and the camera in a small backpack with a lightweight tripod and be able to digiscope from 1000 - 3000 mm in peace...

    Nikon P5100

Rich, Each Nikon upgrade has made improvements to image quality, although the feature set hasn't changed that much. In saying this the difference between the Jpegs from the P5100 and P6000 would be less that 10%, but it is nice to have RAW. The wider lens makes it a bit more difficult...

    Nikon P5100

As I've been playing around with the P6000 and the D90 recently I had forgotten about the P5100 and how good it's been for me over the last year. Here are some images from last year that I've reworked a bit through CS2. Neil. Nikon P5100 plus Swarovski STS80HD scope and Sw 30,45 and zoom...

    Nikon P5100

Ian, The Nikon UR-E20 will give you a 28mm thread which will match up with the DCA, but there is a third party adapter (Ebay, Amazon ) which has a 52mm thread. Neil.

    Nikon P5100

Colin, Great results from those distances. Detail on the Kingfisher was about as good as you can get at 30 metres. Neil.

    Nikon P5100

The reason for selecting Aperture Priority is that we want to achieve the fastest shutter speed possible and Depth of Field is not part of the decision making process with digiscoping ( there's very little anyway ). The Macro focusing steps are much finer . But I suspect that it also just...
