Pacific GP Of interest, while we were watching the Pacific GP on Saturday evening, feeding and preening I thought I heard a distance Spotted Redshank. Not totally familiar with Pacific GP, knowing like most GP's the breeding flight calls are typically mournful, its contact call is slightly...

Possible Tristis Chiffchaff at Alrewas One of the seven wintering Chiffchaffs at Alrewas Gravel pits must be a good candidate for "tristis". Showed well today in willows opposite the sewage works. First chance that me and Kay have had to have a look at this area. My images do not really do this...

West Midlands Bird Club Sorry I am little late responding but Nick is so right regarding the county boundaries, luckily it was just before my time although I seem to remember the Worcestershire boys standing at one end of Bartley Reservoir waiting for the bird to drift over the border. I think...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

I went up the Chase this afternoon, this morning there was upwards of 100 Crossbill in the area and speaking to others included the bigger female. This was not the case whilst I was there, the flock was still about the same as I saw before (50+) and included the bigger billed male that was happy...

Agreed Nick, I already knew that. Larch is fairly easy to break off, think the older post possible means when they are in other types of Pine.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

How many different birds are there in your images. One of males mirrors the bird I saw last week, bill structure was not easy to see against the darkness of the tree trunks. I cant see why some of these are not Parrot Crossbils based on head strutcture alone to be honest, yes the bills not...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

There was only two people that braved the weather today. KayD and myself got there just before midday and evaded the rain but not the wind. The Crossbill flock showed well at times from the upper track, anywhere between the fork in the track to some of the lone trees at the top of the clearing...

Thinking about it, where was you all when the Drayton Bassett bird was found. Oct 17th 2009, having landed at Birmingham Airport and was dropped home, it was straight off to Chasewater to see Black-throated Diver only to divert to Drayton Bassett to see the Ibis...

Taxonomic List of Birds found in Staffordshire, should possibly read "recorded in"... Those optics in the 1700/1800's must have been good!

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Tricky one to call that. I would say not really, it's a pretty good total that and was done in a year with some six BB rarities, which is the last time that happened. It already looks poor with only the first Whooper Swan in this weekend and sadly lacking "grey" geese. I did over 15K in...

It was more of a I don't wan't to waste my time travelling to Yoxall to see a bird of someones imagination, gawd I could write a novel about that, it would be purely fiction of course! Glad to see you have seen sense lads. It would be nice to see other news hitting our screens, Staffs is a big...

I always look for the initials too, it's really so as I know whether to go for a bird or not, lets face it there is still a few errm unreliable sightings still coming through. Apart from that I have no real problems with it, although accountability is a good thing....

Case of mis-identification there. Another case of the disappearing duck at Blithfield.

Looks right for Bald Ibis in flight profile having seen 150 free flying introduced birds in SE Turkey, nice bulky tail and broad wings. Next couple of pots on my blog will have a few flight shots.

Although the images are not conclusive, Bluethroat's soles can be yellow. Unfortuantley could not get there myself, a good record for Staffs, soemthing for the newly arrived birders of the region to un-block.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Popped into Gailey this evening. A bit of a change from your earlier sightings. 29 Arctic and 25 Common Tern. It's possible another 18 Arctic Tern pitched in briefly, however I could not quite prove that at the time as there was a lot going on. 27 Arctic Tern flew out just prior to dusk...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Steve, alas no he isn't, not yet. Although earlier this year there was a bloke stood out outside his car at the Freda's Grave feeding station with a camera rig set up and a MP3 playing. It was really funny though, he was stood no more 2mtrs away, the loop tape he was playing was of Redpoll...
