    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

It's hard to say in a short post but things do seem to be different. We have noted far fewer birds in to roost (of all sorts of species) and maybe the Trust have a role in that beating in mind they choose to have livestock on site (or not) and they should control water levels. I get frustrated...

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

You still had a great day there then! I've had much worse over the years. In fact L Eg is still a great record for Wyver. It doesn't seem to hold them long - I've had the odd one for ten mins and also two together that flew through. If we still had the heronry there we may even encourage a...

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

Wyver was mainly frozen during a late PM visit so the ducks were on the river - 8 Mandarin in flight the highlight. Only 7 Coot on the main pool, Water Rail still on an island of blackberry, Buzzard chased to roost by Crows, Little Owl calling and from the mound the biggest surprise was 6 Grey...

Water Rail at Wyver Lane this afto. Eventually found two as another was under the bird table. The water is high and has forced them out to be more visible. Also 4 Shoveler, Chiffchaff and Little Owl.

Had an hour early afternoon yesterday with little else to add to Daves notes. The only duck were Teal but a guy was fishing the bank on the reserve side which didn't help. There was also a sports car in the layby with two chaps in the field behind seemingly picking mushrooms. Don't they need...

Jack Snipe Message from Dave about a prob Jack Snipe but no scope, so called home for mine and got it after directions from Dave who was still on it in the hide. We watched it bobbing around in the open but it was distant for digi scoping so best I could do! First of the autumn that we know...

Red Breasted Goose, Wyver Dave called to say he picked this up with the Greylags behind the hide. Turns out its been there two days at least according to the hide log. We watched it for a while and no sign of rings. Nice to see even if its origin is at best suspect. I know Roland loves...

Thanks everyone for input, especially since my highlighting the current state of the place. I have been in touch with a friend at DWT to find the best person to email. I will pick the salient points out of this conversation and send it to them. They suggested copying in the Chief Exec who's...

It's mental mate. All of my last few visits have left me feeling DWT have given up. I know the issues with the new residents don't help but a quick strim and the view is restored, simple. There is some evidence of trimming back elsewhere around the place so I don't get it. The top pool is also...

After the rain.... Visited early evening and the water level is high, no waders apart from 2 Lapwing. Counted 14 Gadwall and 12 Teal, Tufties have 4 young. The main highlight was 100's of hirundines feeding busily in every direction. They were over the pool, the wood, cemetery, over the fields...

......a very brief break and sun meant a walk to the mound, adding 2 drake Mandarin, cormorant, oystercatcher, Chiffchaff, blackcap and garden warbler, 1 Common Tern dropped briefly but circled high and out of sight, Green Woodpecker. Raining hard again now.

Constant rain this morning so fsr, so only viewed from the portable hide (!), loads of Hirundines feeding low over the water and also at the river gardens. Counting was near impossible but when they went up with potential predators present I estimated 200-250 birds. 3 Lapwing. Geese were...

Hybrid as in "the offspring of two birds of different species or varieties". They have some Mallard parentage no doubt. Call em what you like they don't look destined to get many young to adult hood! Talking to a guy there the other day who had seen a sizeable Pike.

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

A few hours at Wyver produced first Whitethroat (1 in the layby and 1 in front of the mound), Lesser Whitethroat by the shooting wall and Garden Warbler singing quietly in hawthorn by the car this morning. 2 Sedge singing. Several Buzzards up, lots of Swallows, Sand and House Martins through...
