    Shieldbugs.

A couple of recent bugs. The juniper Shield Bug was a bit of surprise at my town office window. The Green Shield Bug was in my garden yesterday.

    Shieldbugs.

Difficult to be certain but it looks rather elongated and the scutellum is green. Isn't this Hawthorn Shieldbug?

    Shieldbugs.

Even better as that was my tentative best guess.

Can anyone help with an ID for this rather poor shot, taken today? Ta.

FWIW the New Shorter OED agrees with you Harry. "shieldbug Entomol. any of various broad flat hemipteran bugs, esp. pentatomids, with a shield-shaped pronotum and scutellum"

Forest Shieldbug Though folk might like this pic of Forest Shieldbug (Pentatoma rufipes), the latest addition to the list of other fauna attracted to my moth lights. So Harry is it Shieldbug or Shield Bug? ;)

    Shieldbugs.

This probably isn't a shieldbug as such but I'm sure Harry will know it. It was photographed at the weekend in long grass on chalk downland near Winchester.

    Shieldbugs.

Interesting. I identified this as the same species. If I'm right then, yes, they are very variable. This one came to a light trap recently.

Various Bugs Not sure how many of these are Shieldbugs (and I know a couple aren't) but I need help with Id on all but one. I've included the last bug (Heterotoma planicornis) as it has turned up on a couple of occasions recently and those antennae are really wacky. Edit: There are bigger...

I think I may have just obtained a slightly better photo of a Parent Bug found under a leaf on the birch tree in my garden.

    Shieldbugs.

Thanks Harry. Should the scotch be taken before or after the beating?
  14. Brian Stone

    Shieldbugs.

Keep going with the scotch by all means but the two pics are of the same individual insect.

    Shieldbugs.

Dreadful pictures I know, for which I apologise, but I do not know this small shieldbug found last week on the edge of some birch woodland on the Scottish west coast near Ardnamurchan point. Any help gratefully received.

    Shieldbugs.

I'm not doing too well at the moment so best check this, but I think the fly is Volucella pelluscens, a hoverfly. Some good pictures here.

    Shieldbugs.

Thanks Harry. I think I now have the difference between Hawthorn and Birch sorted out in my tiny mind.

Hi Harry Could you just check the ID of this bug please. Came to the light trap over the weekend on the busy night of 30th Apr. Ta

    Shieldbugs.

From now on Ken always carry a pot with you (you've reminded me to put one back in my pocket). I carried a few around all summer last year. You never know when that little goodie is going to drop by! ;)

Isn't that Green Shield Bug (Palomena prasina) Harry?

    Shieldbugs.

Found one of these at Weeting, Norfolk yesterday. They are active little fellas and certainly not easy to get a good pic of Steve.

    Shieldbugs.

More heraldic bugs for Harry The first of these was in a light trap on the Teifi estuary in Wales on 8th August and the other was on Lemon Verbena in my garden near Peterborough on 18th August.

Another one for Harry. Found just now on my office window near centre of Peterborough, UK.

Shield Bug? I suspect this isn't a shieldbug at all. Over to you Harry.
