Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Either Arbourfield Drive and a long walk through the site, or park at the end of Mossfield Road at the end of the industrial estate and head north. Just don't leave any valuables in your car, they're not always safe, especially tucked away at the end of Mossfield Road. Adam

From M6 north, take J15, follow the A500 for about 8 miles and take the exit signposted "Kidsgrove, Tunstall, Longbridge Hayes Ind. Est." The road swoops round and back under the A500. Go straight over seven round abouts, that's left hand lane, middle lane, left hane lane, middle lane (3rd exit...

I think I got my weeks mixed up. I had it on the 3rd July if my memory is now working properly. All these weeks are just blurring into one! Adam

Thank god someone else picked up that little tern (and a friend). I had one at Kingsbury Water Park that morning and was convinced no one would believe me. In other news, 2 spotted flycatchers were showing really well at RSPB Coombes Valley yesterday. One at the bottom of Buzzard Bank, just as...

I guess at this time of year it probably qualifies for this thread. A pied flycatcher was seen at Coombes on Saturday in the top meadow. The first sighting of one for some time. Adam

Where abouts in Kidsgrove? Any near by woodland it might be in? Would love to catch up with one (finally!). Adam

Had a family of spotted flycatchers of a similar size at Coombes on Tuesday. Also seen a few in the top meadow at the reserve this week. Definatley seems the time to catch up with them. Adam

I was on about turtle doves. http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/18006233 Although that article says the decline is from 1997 and not 1970. One of the old Coombes vols is now at Bempton. Pretty jealous as not only does she get to go twitch anything that lands from there to Spurn, but she also goes out...

Not just Staffs. They were recently outlined as the quickest declining bird in the UK: 91% population decline in the UK since 1970 (I think). Sad times. Adam

Yep, no sign of the stone curlew from 10-1. Did hear a grasshopper warbler reeling for a brief period though, had a red kite over the mast at 12.55 too. Adam

Got a text from an ex-vol at Coombes (now assistant warden at Leighton Moss) trying to grip me over them. Thank god I saw the Cheshire breeding birds a few years back or I'd have never lived it down. Figured he'd ended up with 'our' birds from yesterday. Adam

Just read on Twitter that one of my mates had a spoonbill fly over his house and towards Brown Edge at about 7-8pm (it says 4h ago so don't know the exact time). Although he isn't a 'proper' birder (so hasn't reported it), I trust his ID skills greatly, and lets be honest, not much you can...

Crane still there this morning, although a bit distant. Plenty of other folk there too. Adam

Makes me feel slightly better too. Called in Endon sewage works on the way home at about 11 on Saturday, purely on an off chance. Saw nothing but pied wags, 2 grey wags, and a flock of 50-60 lapwing. Felt a little bit gripped when I got home to find out a GWE was there two hours before me! Not...

Agreed. Covering up the head on the screen says Mealy. Cover up the body and it looks closer to lesser (not at the same time, or else it's just a hand). I'd lean towards mealy though overall, be good to see them alongside lessers though. Adam

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Agreed. Sure I read an article somewhere about continental birds being more confiding (cue joke :t: ), as human population density is sparser in the EU than UK. This means they simply don't recognise us as a threat, so they don't mind getting a bit closer to us (cue a second joke :t: ). Maybe...

Hoping to take some of the Coombes Valley volunteers out for a days birding in Staffs soon, hopefully picking up some of the scarcer things; crossbills, LSW, LEO, etc. We'd be heading to the Chase anyway, so will have a look in on them feeders. Adam M

Are we assuming the hawfinches at Cannock Chase are on the feeding station just past the visitor center on Marques Drive? Any more info much appreciated. Adam

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

I see 13 grey partridge reported at Whitmore Haye on Staffs birders Facebook page. Can anyone give me directions to where they are on the site? It's most likely the commonest bird missing off my life list, so would be good to see one. Thanks in advance. Adam

The LSW reported 1 mile along the canal from Frog hall end. I am guessing that means 1 mile back up (east/north-east) the Churnet Valley, towards the RSPB land there? Can anyone confirm this as I have never walked down the canal to Froghall and I have no idea where it goes from there. Be great...

My dad has just relayed a report from his mate about waxwings at the bottom of Reginald Mitchell Way seen this morning. I didn't get provided with any more information than that I am afraid. Adam
