Sexes are alike. Almost impossible to differentiate between them. Have banded __ringed about 1400 and desnpite careful study still not able to give a definite opinion (except a breeding female) Alex- Tiger1

I have never been a "list keeper " nor am i interested if some so called expert decides that a bird has one millionth of a percent of the X factor more than he thinks it should. Two Months of Lifers Down Under
The male and female firetails are extremely hard to separate. A.Y. Pepper wrote that in the breeding season the females ear patch goes more orange but despite having caught and banded a few hundred i have never been able to distinguish any difference. Peppers study birds were captive bred. Alex- Tiger1
