    best camera?

OK, I've converged on the Green Feathers v3 camera. Marvelous device, well engineered, excellent support, and informative YouTube videos all over the place. The one demerit is that Green Feathers is in the UK, and while they market to the U.S., shipping charges are significant. Amazon used to...

    best camera?

I'm interested in installing a screech owl nest box camera. I'd like wifi transmission, low light responsivity and or illumination, and plug-in (I'd like to avoid batteries and would rather not bother with solar power. I can easily run a line). Motion detection would be nice. Ideally economical...

    bats?

Well, screech owls are just as large as many other species. True, our bats don't move in until late spring, which is after the start of Screech Owl nesting. Makes sense to block off the nest before Screech Owl nesting season, which is around now, and lasts until August.

    bats?

So I've put up a screech owl nest box. Looking forward to getting some residents. Highly squirrel-proof. There are many screech owls in the neighborhood. Now I understand there is some risk of other birds occupying the nest box. How does one discourage that? Also, we have a horde of resident...

do barred owl and screech owls get along?

Well, there is no lack of other birds for these barred owls to get, as well as rodents aplenty. So I guess the question is whether they PREFER screech owls. Do people have successful screech boxes in areas with barred owls? I have identified THIS interesting paper which seems to suggest that...

do barred owl and screech owls get along?

We have resident barred owls that nest nearby in our riparian habitat (Central Texas). Wonderful. I wanted to put up a box for them, but realized that I'd need a truck and a crane to do it. Barred owl boxes are ENORMOUS. Sigh. But a neighbor down the street has a screech owl box, which is more...

    bees in hummingbird feeder

Yes, but there are four identical ports, and the bees cluster on one. Not clear why that one port would be leaking sugar solution if the others aren't. Next fill cycle I will take some trouble to inspect. Thanks.

    bees in hummingbird feeder

So my hummer-feeder has been "found" by bees. Rather odd in that the yellow thing they're clustering on is sold as a "bee guard". I like having bees around (I'm a vegetable gardener), but it would be nice to discourage them from sitting there. How do I do that?

looking to identify hawk-like bird seen in Central Texas

I think that might just be it. They do indeed migrate through Texas. It was pretty far away, and what I called a black stripe might well have been brown. Thank you! I should add that many hawks have a mostly white but mottled chest. This one was pure white, and osprey does have that.

looking to identify hawk-like bird seen in Central Texas

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture, but this was a rather large bird in a tree over a lake. Brown back and head, and white chest, sort of like a Red Tailed Hawk. But of interest was a conspicuous black stripe on the head coming back from the eyes. Small beak.

where do barred owls feed their fledgelings?

We have a tree out back that regularly hosts barred owl nests. Just had at least one owlet fledge. My understanding is that mom and dad continue to feed the fledgling for a while. Where exactly does that happen? Do they go and meet back at the nest, or ...?

    storing birdseed without bugs?

This is the first time it has happened to me but, as I said, it is a common occurance in bulk purchases of grains and flours (as in, when you scoop the stuff out of a bin in order to buy it). Those storage modes are highly accessible to flying insects. Sealable bins area fine idea, unless the...

    storing birdseed without bugs?

Yeah, birds don't mind bugs in their seed. But if the bugs have turned the seed to dust, they'll probably mind. I'm serious. When I found the infestation, about a quarter of the seed volume had been reduced to dust. In the possible chemical strategies that I suggested, once the grain is aired...

    storing birdseed without bugs?

Thanks. Except, as I said, the bag was well sealed. The infestation came with the bag. Now, when I get bulk grains at stores, I ALWAYS freeze them before storing to kill anything in them. If you don't do that, you'll end up with an infestation. Same thing.

    storing birdseed without bugs?

So I got to the store and get a big sack of seed. The bag is pretty well sealed, as it is being used. But a few months down the line, the bag is FILLED with bugs. No doubt they came with the seed. Left alone, the bugs gradually turn the seed into dust. My question is, how can one treat a bag of...
