    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

The fact that "Tropical Eastern Pacific Booby" is a proposed common name gives me a strong sense of dread.

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

So where in the Pacific does one see one species, or the other, or both?

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

That's the nesting ranges, but of course boobies wander far at sea.

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

If you saw any in Florida they would be Northern. It's a Nearctic-Neotropical split.

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

Including me! Does anyone know what the range of the new Brown Booby taxa would be? Do the two overlap anywhere?

Surprised to see the Herring Gull split there!

Maybe 2 Vireos, South Padre Island Convention Ctr, TX, USA

Photos 1 and 2 show a Warbling Vireo. Not sure about the others, but thinking probably Bell's.

    Is this a Turkey Vulture?

It's very possible this is a dumped pet. It's also possible they are an established introduced species in the area, there's lots of local established populations that are undocumented due to a general lack of interest in this species by most birders.

Scottish Crossbill - Yes? No? Never?

The splits were made with the desire to further split Red Crossbill in the future, it's just that we don't have enough info to fully understand the diversity within it yet.

    Is this a Turkey Vulture?

    I agree with Muscovy Duck.

Britain's most prolific egg collector, reoffends again.

This kind of thing is bizarrely frequent in British law, to the point where people will fake a mental disorder to get out of jail time. Edwin Rist, who stole potentially millions of dollars worth of specimens from the British Museum, got no jail time due to an Asperger's diagnosis that he has...

Age of first breeding of the Pygmy Cormorant? (and a rant about ChatGPT hallucinations)

I would recommend not asking ChatGPT for info like this. Try Birds of the World. If Birds of the World doesn't have any info, then yeah, it's unknown.

    Laughing Falcon on Merlin

Merlin works a lot of the time, but it also often gets things wrong. I would disregard those two IDs, they are nearly impossible. American Coot has been recorded in the UK only a handful of times ever (mostly in the Shetlands) and Laughing Falcon has never been recorded in the UK (and almost...

Possibly Eurasian Collared Dove? 4/25/2024. Morehead, North Carolina

There are a few locations in North America where African Collared-Dove does seem to have a persistent breeding population in low numbers. North Carolina is not of those places.

Possibly Eurasian Collared Dove? 4/25/2024. Morehead, North Carolina

African Collared-Dove is a common species in captivity and as such some individuals may occasionally escape, but that would be a rare occurrence. Compare that to Eurasian Collared-Dove which is a very common species all times of year through most of North Carolina.

Possibly Eurasian Collared Dove? 4/25/2024. Morehead, North Carolina

African Collared-Dove technically cannot be ruled out yes, but in North Caroline that species is not known to occur. So this is (almost certainly) a Eurasian Collared-Dove.

The ebird update - How do you like it?..

One thing I found that bugs me is that you can only view Trip Reports from within the last month. What was the point of making them public, then?

SW Florida USA - which swallow?

It's not Barn Swallow, it lacks the distinctive tail. Going by tail shape, this bird is probably Purple Martin. Possibly Cave Swallow, I'm not familiar with that species in the field so I can't say for sure it isn't one.
