    Puerto Angel boat trip

I will be in Oaxaca over Christmas period, and was reading with interest how people on bird tours go on boat trips from Puerto Angel. Does anyone know how best to do this independently? Should I just go talk to a fishing trip - presumably they should go out 10-15km, off the continental shelf...

    Ideal weather conditions in October

For a piece of random statistical analysis, would you be willing to offer your thoughts on the ideal weather conditions on the Scillies in October for interesting birds turning up (not just megas, but anything non-native)? Like, easterly winds, or rain the day before, or low pressure system...

Is Bahrain in the Western Palearctic?

I just had the misfortune to visit Bahrain for a business meeting. But from the taxi I did spot Bridled Tern and Common Myna. Can I add them to my western palearctic list and still keep my lister head up high? John

Birds of New Guinea field guide

Does any one know anything about the publication of the 2nd edition of Birds of New Guinea by Bruce Beehler? Amazon.com said Princeton University Press would publish it on 8 April, which didnt happen, and when I asked Princeton directly they said they have it down for publication in April 2011...

    Brisbane area birding

In a few months time I'm going to have a couple of days in Brisbane when I'm free to go birding. I will have a car. I just wondered if any one could offer some advice. I have birded in this area in the past, principally Lamington NP, and I'm keen to try somewhere different. I quite fancy...

    Extremadura

Any recommendations for accommodation somewhere around Trujillo for a long weekend end of April? Not sure whether its better to be in town (for access to restaurants and boozeries) or in some plush finca out of town. Also if there are any hoteliers likely to be brimming with info about bird...

Good spot for farm birds in West Norfolk

Does anyone know of anywhere that is good for farm birds at the moment in west Norfolk? For the purposes of planning NYD birdathon, I'm looking for good info. I've found Choseley Barns area to be a bit rubbish on 1 Jan in the past. I'm thinking Corn Buntings, Yellowhammers, Grey Partridges etc.

    More data analysis: Shetland rarities

My boredom reaches new depths, leading me to analyse Shetland rarity timing as well as the Scillies. Might be of interest to someone. Same routine as before, this time Asian vagrants on Shetland. The chart shows bird days, so a bird that turns up on 28th Sep and leaves 30th Sep is recorded...

    American warblers, Scillies, lack thereof

The season to worry about these things is upon us. I was just doing a quick bit of statistic research, as one does when bored at work, and discovered popular concerns about the Scillies seemed to be backed by evidence. Number of American warblers present in October, totals by decade...

    La Niña and Nearctic vagrants

With La Niña pushing the jet stream down over the UK with lots of fast moving weather systems coming over the Atlantic, does the prospect for American vagrants look good this autumn? I was wondering if there was a correlation between La Niña years and nearctic vagrants in the UK. 1985 and 1995...

    Field Guide for SE Brazil

Another quick question: Which field guide(s) would you recommend for SE Brazil? I've read the 'All the Birds of Brazil' book is not the best. I have the Southern South America Checklist book. Is it worth getting the Ridgely and Tudor books on SA birds? Seems quite big and expensive. Also...

SE Brazil birding trip - wetland sites?

I'm planning a 3 week birding trip to SE Brazil in late Aug/early Sep. I have identified various birding spots from trip reports and excellent Arthur Grosset's website. All these sites are primarily Atlantic Forest or Cerrado. My question is, are there any good wetland birding sites in the...

    Mourning Wheatear site in Morocco

I've left this far too late, as we go to Morocco tomorrow, but does anyone know a specific location (as in km on roadside) for Mourning Wheatear in southern Morocco? I'm sure I can find out about one at Boulmades, but it would be helpful to know beforehand if possible.

    Scottish twitch and grouse

I just transformed a brief visit to scotland to do a delivery into a top birding weekend. I thought this might be of interest to someone visiting in winter. Starting in Glasgow, first stop Loch Vanechar for the Barrow's Goldeneye. After some searching, it appeared at the dam end of the loch...

    Speyside in February

Hopefully spending a weekend in Aviemore shortly (February). Could anyone offer advice on where I might see specialty birds up there at this time of year, including - Ptarmigan - Crested Tit - Scottish Crossbill May thanks John

Has competitive year listing died a death?

Bored, flicking through Surfbirds, I has a quick look at the 2006 British year list - top 50. Only about 16 entries were above 300. This is a high number, obviously, but hardly that special for the really obsessive yearlisters of yesteryear. Even Master Evans score was not that high (for...

    New Year's day (2007) listing

As an alternative to having a stinking hangover, I thought I might try and see as many species as possible this New Year's day. I just wondered whether other people were doing likewise and where they might go and hope to see. My current draft plan involves north Norfolk, perhaps starting at...

    Water levels in Southern Spain?

I'm going to southern spain for a week in mid September, principally for the migration around Tarifa, but we're also planning a few days further north towards Doñana. I was wondering if anyone knew what the water levels at a few birding spots might be like at the moment? In particular, is...

    Food consumption of garden birds

Does anyone know how many calories or quantity of seed different types of common (UK) birds consume each day? E.g. how many grams of bird seed does a house sparrow need? Or a wood pigeon? I understand this varies greatly according to temp/activity, but I'm just after a guesstimate. The...

Best European birding spot in September

Would any one have views on where would be the best place to spend a week birding in Europe in September? I am thinking migration, but any ideas v welcome. Perhaps east for different birds to UK?

Lewis, Harris and North Uist for the weekend

I just had an excellent weekend in the outer hebrides. Anyone going up there shortly might be interested in the following. There were 2 white-billed divers at Port Skigersta on Saturday, at about NB 565 590. I viewed them from Creag a Rubha, following some reasonable peat-cutter trails across...

    Hebrides and Eagles

I'm off to Lewis this weekend, principally to check out White Billed Diver and, perhaps, Corncrake (if they've turned up). But I had a question for those in the know - is there anywhere in particular where on might perchance see an eagle sp? I mean somewhere not causing disturbance of course...

    UK red kite population question

Does anyone have any estimates of the number of breeding pairs of red kites in the UK in 2005? The Gigrin Farm website provides excellent estimates for 2004 - I just wondered if more recent data were available now that it is December. The reason I ask is just out of personal interest. I've...

    Flamborough Head this coming weekend

I have the rare opportunity to be in E Yorks this week due to work, and I could well find Friday morning free. As I've never seen Little Auk before I was quite excited to note the strong northerly winds, which I hear could mean huge flocks of the blighters passing Flamborough Head. One concern...
