    Watching owls near Cambridge?

I saw the little owl at Burwell really well yesterday afternoon, 3PM. You should give it another go.

Pretty rubbish Autumn on Shetland so far, no?

    Uganda/Rwanda

The road running through Nyungwe is open all the time. There is nothing to stop you from listening for the owl from the roadside. Probably far more realistic than trying to walk on a path at night! I'm sure the rangers at the park headquarters would be willing to help, for a fee. I doubt the...

    Cuba - guide and resort

Just to add, Playa Larga is a beautiful destination in its own right. Good snorkelling at the Cueve place as well. I could happily spend a week or two there, even if Angel is only available for one day.

    Cuba - guide and resort

The Casa Mesa is a really nice guesthouse in Playa Larga. There is quite a lot of birding you can do without a guide if you want to do more than one day. Cueve de los Peces for the ground dove, the hummingbird garden at the village to the north, the crocodile farm and the marshes to the north...

    Trip to Iguazu

Independent birding is not too hard there either. The forest is reasonably open. I found a track into the main area of forest on the Argentine side of Iguazu, away from the masses of tourists and had some great birds. This was a while ago though so it may have changed.

    Mayday farm- Goshawk

I saw one fly over the A11 randomly a few weeks ago. They are very much present. I think on a still, warmish, sunny March day, wandering around the forest tracks in that area, you have a good chance of connecting with a goshawk. Good luck! Edit: I should add that I doubt you will get a good...

    Goa in June?

Goa is seriously wet in June. A friend who over summered there says it is not good. How about further north, in the Himalayas? There are heaps of birds. India is a lovely country and generally very safe.

I'm not from there, but when visiting Montreal I have enjoyed parc nacional d'oka and Morgan arboretum.

    Pied Crow near M’hamid yesterday

That's great news Mohamed. Am I right in thinking that it is usually seen in the north east of town, on the right when you first enter the town? Thanks John

    Birdguides new system

In addition I used to be able to search for 'warbler' to pick up all birds with that term, but now that has been banned. And the filter has to be turned on every time i want to use it.

    Birdguides new system

It's not just appearances. The search function has significantly less functionality. Searching by month was very useful, but that has gone. The web designers are just thinking about impressing a future employer with a magazine like web page, and are uninterested in user experience. John

    Mallorca 2017

I saw two golden eagles at Cuber reservoir two days ago - clear as day. I thought they had died out on mallorca. have they come back? John

What's been your "Best ever find" under "challenging" conditions?

My effort: a lovely Azure Tit beside a Chinese Army base not far from the border with Afghanistan. Didn't involve any physical effort at all. It was more about explaining myself.

    World Yearlist Record Attempt

Fair enough. Sounds cool. Like I said, what do I know? Not a lot. Has anyone ever done a self-found world big year? No guides except non-birdwatchers only to keep you safe in dodgy places? I saw some 1,600 species in a year of backpacking once (Africa, S.America, Australasia), but I'm sure...

    World Yearlist Record Attempt

Given he can afford the best bird guides and all those flights, I'm sure he can afford more than one laptop! Seems a bit hollow to me, being shown lots of birds by bird guides as fast as possible. But then what do i know?

    World Yearlist Record Attempt

When I've been backpacking for long periods, i got my folks to post guide books to the poste restante of the local city and i would pick them up. That's how to do it in the twentieth century style. I'm sure today's futuristic techno kids have a better solution.

    Beidaihe May 15

We stayed by main beach, where most hotels are. People thought we were Russian. The few birders I met (3) were staying in more expensive places nr the point. I imagine thats where bird tour groups would stay. Birds turned up anywhere. I had nice eyebrowed thrush in a car park. The point is good.

    Beidaihe May 15

Theres a very good train their from Beijing. Once there, plenty of local buses. We just cruised around on foot, as distances not great. Taxis are fairly reasonable. Be very polite is you bump into the army near their camp at the point, but I found them to be very friendly and unconcerned, and...

    Beidaihe May 15

Theres plenty of hotels there, as it is a summer vacation spot. We just turned up in early May and got a nice room for 200 yuan with a bit of haggling. very few birders there though, in may 2010. Dont expect something like the scillies in the 1980s. Dont expect much english either. Take a...
