    Woodpecker and fir cones

    Today I saw a Greater spotted woodpecker carry a fir cone to a maple tree. There it proceeded to peck at it for 10-15 minutes. There cannot have been enough insects in the cone to last that long so I assume that it was eating the seeds in the cone. Is this normal?

    Woodpecker eating apples

    I have an apple tree in my garden, SE Sweden. There are often 5 or 6 blackbirds on the branches eating the apples. Yesterday and today a Great Spotted Woodpecker as joined in, eating apples! Is this unusual, or have other people seen this behaviour?
