    Dark Grey Heron

I photographed this Grey Heron at Porthgwarra, Cornwall on 1st October '23 when the seawatching was truly dreadful. It appears to be very dark, have a very long neck and extensive black cap and it got me musing on why it is a Grey Heron and not a Great Blue Heron. I looked at the literature on...

    Inoculations for Kruger National Park

My wife and I will be visiting Kruger for a fortnight in mid-November and have read very conflicting information on various medical websites about the inoculations required/advised, two in particular: Malaria and Rabies. My own GP's surgery believes both are not really necessary. Has anyone any...

Best bird ID book for South/Southern Africa

Hi, I am planning a short holiday in South Africa in November including drives through Kruger NP. Is this a good time to visit this area and what is the best id book to take with me? I have suggested South/Southern Africa as I am sure to return to other areas in the future so happy to get an...

Unusual Yellow Wagtail, Abberton Reservoir, Essex, May 1st 1988

Way back in 1988, 1st May, I was an inexperienced birder birding Hanningfield Reservoir whilst on my annual trip to the Rugby League Cup Final and was delighted to find a number of Yellow Wagtails on the outer banking. In amongst them were 50+ Yellow Wagtails, Grey, White and Pied Wagtails and...

Id help please, day flying moth, Bedruthen Steps North Cornwall

Hi, We saw the moths in the attached pictures at Bedruthen steps on the North Cornwall coast on 4th August around 14.30 on an overcast afternoon. I presume there was a male and a female with the female appearing to be huge in the body. Size of the male similar to say a Meadow Brown butterfly...

    Snipe sp in a garden

I was sent this picture by a relative who saw this bird in their Cheshire garden this morning. I presume it is a Common Snipe but the unusual location for such a flighty bird and the extreme lack of any warm tones in the head stripes and on the flank prompted me to raise an eyebrow. Common Snipe?

    Disappearing Ducks?

A relative of mine has a narrow boat and was recently around the South-East Midlands. There has been a spate of sheep killings in the area which seems to be linked to people taking the carcasses to use or sell for food. He also noticed that where there used to be a lot there are no longer any...

    Unusual Lark

I saw this lark in Lancashire this evening when I was struck by the plain white underside, limited black streaking on the upper breast, the bold supercilium and bulbous eye ring and very rounded head with no hint of a crest. Not sure the tertials are long enough for Short-toed Lark so presumably...

    Old Swarovski 10x40 binoculars

I have a magnificent pair of the older style Swarovski 10x40's which I saved for penny by penny and finally bought in 1996. They have served me so well from ice to sand and heat and still in great shape apart from one of the soft plastic eye cups which I lost this weekend. I can try Swarovski...

    Cornish Wader: Lesser Yellowlegs?

I was going through some old photographs recently and came upon the attached picture which I think was taken in Cornwall, probably August 1992. Back then I was just a young birder trying to get to grips with bird identification. Now I am an old birder, trying to get to grips with bird...

    Kenyan bird

Saw the attached bird on our recent visit to Kenya and struggling with an id. My suggestion is a Jacobin (or Black and White) Cuckoo but the bill doesn't look robust enough and this bird has a definite supercilium. It was photographed in September near Amboseli in the South of the country. I...

    Australian songster

A friend has asked me to identify the bird in the attached video. As my knowledge of Australian birds is limited to knowing that Kookaburra sits in an old Gum tree..... I would welcome some help! Unfortunately I don't know in what part of Australia the video was shot but it was recent if that...

    Eagle in Kenya

Just returned from a marvellous holiday in Kenya including Safari, the only disappointment - or was it a bonus- was that none of the guides for the Safaris, or the others in our vehicles - had much interest in or knowledge of birds beyond the very obvious. It was good because my wife and I had...

    Unidentified Caterpillar

My wife discovered this Caterpillar whilst gardening and it attached itself to her coat. It is about 3 to 3.5cm long. Anyone know what it is please?

    Possible Bean Goose

I saw the attached Goose on Newton Marsh, Lancashire yesterday which I think may be a Rossicus type Bean Goose based on the length of the bill between fabalis and Pink-footed, longer and more triangular than Pink-footed, shorter neck than fabalis and broad white margins to the mantle and...

    Bali in September

I am visiting the Nusa Dua area of Bali on the Bukit Peninsula at the end of September and wondered if anyone who knows the region can recommend any 'must do' birding sites ion the area. I was also looking at the available Bird Guides and would welcome any suggestions: the 'Field Guide to the...

    Warbler from the Camargue

Hi, can anyone help with this warbler we saw in the Camargue in October? It seemed more robust than a Willow Warbler and longer in the body. The Supercilium appears to arch downwards behind the eye and the crescent beneath the eye looks quite thick. Any thoughts?

    Buzzards from Turkey

On a recent October holiday in Dalyan, Southern Turkey, I took these pictures of Buzzards and would welcome some comment I thought 1. A Steppe Buzzard from the short wings, lack of a bold black carpal area 2. Long-legged Buzzard as it appeared long-winged with clean white base to the primaries...

    Mystery bird Dalyan, Turkey

I recently spent a couple of weeks in Dalyan, Turkey and mixed a marvellous holiday with some excellent birding: highly recommended. I got this picture on Iztuzu beach on 16th October 2015 when I was photographing a couple of Stonechats and this suddenly popped up. I took the picture but when I...

Unidentified Seabird, between Lancashire and the Isle of Man

Hi, I have had the attached picture tucked away since 2011 and was about to delete it but thought I would give it one more airing before doing so in the hope that someone might be able to help. The bird in the photograph was seen between Heysham, Lancashire, and the Isle of Man, mid-afternoon on...

    Galapagos Grey-headed Gull

    Odd Meadow Pipit

At Titchwell on Saturday I watched an odd pipit with a really pink belly which can be seen on the head on shot, becoming near salmon pink in the centre of the belly and really cold margins to the wing featers, lacking Meadow's usual olive tones. It was unlike any Meadow Pipit I have ever seen ...
