    Article on Parabolic Microphone Gain

I wrote this last month and forgot about it. Simply meant to be a reference for anyone bored enough to read it. Some years ago I was looking for papers on this and only found one that really touched on the topic (it is cited) in a non-trivial way. But it was also pretty dense at points and hard...

    Another site for finding guides

Just came across this in the context of a different thread on birding in Cuba: the site orniverse.com . I had never seen this before, and I'm guessing it is relatively new? Wondering if anyone here has used it. Seems like a good idea, and provides another place to look for local guides.

Unknown species on two recordings from KIA Lodge, April 29, 2023

I am trying to figure out two songs/calls. The first was from on open field in front of the lodge. There is a very loud Ring-necked Dove, but also a tinkling kind of song that reminds me of a north American Bobolink. Never saw the bird. The second is from a garden area and sounds like a warbler...

Is this a Song Thrush singing?

Being an American in Holland right now, I am a bit out of my depth. I recorded part of a song - never sa w the bird, but the repeated phrases make me think I got the ID right. Yes? No? Thanks in advance.

    Maastricht in April

My wife and I will be here for a week next month -- she will be working, and I will have some time to look for birds. Is anyone here familair with the area and any good spots, beyond the few locations marked in eBird? Short train trips are a possibility too. Thanks.

Zoom F3 and Rode NTG5 not playing well together

After months of deciding how to upgrade my field setup, I recently purchased both of these items. Setting everything up per the Zoom manual, I was disappointed to find myself recording horrific noise of an intermittent nature. The only way to mitigate it was to select 24V phantom power instead...

World Series of Birding 2022: Something New

Is anyone here going to participate in the May 14th Big Day competition sponsored by New Jersey Audubon? It would be nice to say hello - surprsingly, I am going to be there. This is not the sort of event I naturally gravitate towards... I'm going to be participating because this is the first...

    Minnesota, USA, female scoter

Bad photos as bird swam away. Am thinking white-winged. Not a common bird here, but this species and Surf Scoters have been seen at nearby lakes during past month. Any takes? Thanks

USA, Minnesota, two short audio clips, bird not seen, possibly Bald Eagle?

Just recorded this. Going through xeno-canto and Macauley comparisons, Bald Eagle is the best I can come up with, although it is somewhat disimilar in frequency to typical recordings. This was near a lake where they are seen on occasion. Thanks in advance.

The Complete Birds of the World: Every Species Illustrated (Princeton)

Just got an email from Cornell Lab touting this book. Anyone know anything about it?? Authors/artists: Norman Arlott, Ber van Perlo, Jorge R. Rodriguez Mata, Gustavo Carrizo, Aldo A. Chiappe, and Luis Huber "The ultimate reference book for birdwatchers and bird lovers—the first single-volume...

    Birdproofing windows in our home

The link below has an overview of a project I have mostly completed at our house, to eliminate the occasional bird/glass interaction. We have a large wall of windows that we have been trying to "fix" for several years now. We had been using vinyl sihouettes of raptors, but it simply was not...

Bird Finder by Zip Code, for USA

Here is nifty site for looking at species by zip code. It utilizes nothing but historical eBird data, but it provides a pleasing output including what you can expect to find within a given radius for a given month, and both the % of checklists with the bird and the change in % relative to the...

Good News! Trump's Intended Bird-killing Rules To Be Revoked

Ridiculous that we ever had to take the step backwards, to then be corrected by this step forwards. https://www.audubon.org/news/biden-administration-says-it-will-revoke-trump-rule-let-companies-kill-birds

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's Flycatcher? - Beijing, China

June 2, 2018, at a site about an hours drive or so west of Beijing. I think I know which it is, but my ID has been challenged. Any insight is appreciated!

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's?

I am 95% sure on my ID of this, which agrees wtih what the local guide there, an ornithologist, called it. This was taken near Beijing in June 2018. I have had this ID recently challenged so I would like some other opinions. Thanks!

Public Comment Period Open Until March 1 For US Migratory Bird Treaty Act

There was a thread started by Mysticete back in the summer that is related, here. That dealt with the appalling attack on th MBTA by the Trump administration. I wanted to start a new thread to call attention to an opportunity we now have to help rectify things - for those people, like me, that...

Bald Eagle article, with proposed name change

My wife and I had the pleasure of birding with the author of this article last spring. We met up with him purely by chance at Sax-Zim Bog in northern MN, during our last gasp effort to end our 20-plus-years-Nemesis-Bird-Horrorshow, known to others as the LeConte's Sparrow. With Bruce we did...

Looking to replace my Nikon Coolpix P900

My Nikon P900 has mostly served me well, but it has suffered some dings of late and after 2.5 years of constant use and abuse I think I may move on. I would like another bridge camera because: 1. I am not a serious photographer, I am a birder that likes to use a camera as a tool. A tool to help...

    A Birding Marathon?

I am curious if anyone has done this before. I did some internet searching and couldn't find an example that involved serious birding. It is this idea: Walk (at least) the distance of a marathon, 26.2 miles, in the course of a day, while birding the entire time. Potty and lunch breaks excepted...

Good News - US court helping birds

(Reuters) - A federal judge in New York on Tuesday sided with environmental groups in striking down a Trump administration decision to roll back U.S. government protections for migratory birds that made it illegal for nearly 50 years to inadvertently kill them. In a 31-page ruling that began by...

No success here deterring squirrels with capsaicin

Hello from from the Twin Cities, Minnesota. We don't usually do feeders - and when we do, it is usually just a simple block of plain suet. Chickadees, woodpeckers, nuthatches, and blue jays all take it. Our mammals don't touch it. Works great. Last week my wife bought some seed and put that...

Female Harrier in UAE: Hen vs. Pallid ???

All: Several days ago I took some poor photos of a female harrier. See below. Initially calling this Pallid - if I understand correctly, though, the number of 'long' primary feathers , which looks to be five in the bottom photo, would indicate a Hen. Any thoughts? Thanks, Michael...
