Beginner looking for advise (Canon 7d mkII + Tamron 100-400 Di VC USD)

Thanks for the additional feedback. Since I created this thread, I eventually managed to start getting shots I was happy with, but with a pretty low hit rate. The camera and lens did require fairly strong micro adjustment and I never managed to get anything reasonable when shooting wide open...

Beginner looking for advise (Canon 7d mkII + Tamron 100-400 Di VC USD)

My understanding is that the 7d mkII is supposed to be quite advanced in terms of autofocus and settings. I've tried a few different AF methods, but now I'm only using the single point in the middle (according to the manual, that particular point has better specs than all the others). There is a...

Beginner looking for advise (Canon 7d mkII + Tamron 100-400 Di VC USD)

Ok, placed the camera on a flat surface and spent some time today testing different settings. The weather was nice and it was good light outside, so couldn't ask for much better conditions. I can definitely see that some more conservative settings (such as stopping down the aperture) can help...

Beginner looking for advise (Canon 7d mkII + Tamron 100-400 Di VC USD)

gerald, sorry, I didn't realize the photos uploaded to the forum lost their file info. I agree, that's pretty relevant info to start a discussion with! f/6.3, 1/3200 and ISO 640 for the dove (the file info of the other person's photo is available through the link). DMW, I took the dove photo...

Beginner looking for advise (Canon 7d mkII + Tamron 100-400 Di VC USD)

I've decided to take the step into DSLR photography. I've previously used a superzoom that was able to document what I saw, but with very clear limitations in terms of usability and picture quality. I was therefore hoping for a leap forward with my new equipment (see specs in the thread title)...

    Sicilian Bird Guides.

Thanks for your reply Nohatch. I did see your reply before leaving. I didn't have much luck with the partridges, but I guess it's not the best season? I wrote a small account of my experiences in the area: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?p=2866307#post2866307

    NW Sicily

Hi there, I was in the north western part of Sicily the last week of October-13. It was a family trip, where we rented a house a little inland from Trapani. I was more or less birdwatching in the mornings though. Most birders seem to mainly visit the SE part of the island, which therefore seems...

    Sicilian Bird Guides.

Hi, I hope it's ok to bump an old thread. I'm going to Sicily the last week of October. It's more of a family holiday, but I plan to bird a few days as well. We'll be based near Marsala (west coast). I've looked around a bit on the net, but mostly found information about the SE. Within reach...

Yucatan - Calakmul - Palenque in January

You're welcome, I'm glad if my summary can help other birders. I hope you will have nice trip in March. (It seems like one of my unidentified birds was a bicolored hawk, which is uncommon and normally quite secretive. There is a photo of it in the "unidentified" section.)

Unidentified raptor and passerine from Mexico trip

Lesser goldfinch is a good fit for the form, general structure and the likeliness. I would have thought that my bird was too bright yellow for a female though. But if there are no better suggestions, I think I can buy lesser goldfinch. For the second bird, I'm now almost positive it's a...

Unidentified raptor and passerine from Mexico trip

The 1st bird was overall quite bright yellow, without anything black. Does the male am. goldfinch lose the black in winter ? There was no barring on the underside of the raptor. I'm admittedly not from NA, so I don't know too much about the variation of the different accipiter species, but I...

Yucatan - Calakmul - Palenque in January

Some photos (2) I wish the photos trying to capture the mexican antthrush, which was basically jumping around quietly a few meters away would have yielded anything. But alas, no... Edit: I forgot to mention that I have two unidentified birds as well. I put up photos of them in the "bird...

Yucatan - Calakmul - Palenque in January

Some photos (1) I thought I'd share a couple of the birds I saw. I used a pocket digital camera, so the quality suffered a bit. Sorry about that. Above, I forgot to mention that birded the "Usumacinta marshes" while passing by as well. Several of the photos come from there.

Unidentified raptor and passerine from Mexico trip

Hi, I recently came back from a trip to Mexico. I took photos of two birds that I can't seem to identify with Howell's book or the NG guide to North America. The first is a passerine perched on a telephone line in the middle of a small town, somewhere between Champoton and Escarcega (in the...

Yucatan - Calakmul - Palenque in January

Hi again, I'm back from the trip and thought I'd comment a bit on how it went. I'm not gonna make a laundry list of everything I saw, because Howell's books and other trip reports on the net are still pretty much accurate. I'll try to keep it to information I did not find before the trip. So...

Yucatan - Calakmul - Palenque in January

Cool, thanks for all the tips. I'm aware of the distance from the lodging to Calakmul, so I'm prepared for early mornings and some driving. I saw in my guidebook (a couple of years old) and also on some website that the Calakmul ruins are closed on Mondays. I just asked one of the hotels in the...

Yucatan - Calakmul - Palenque in January

True, I've heard that those sites are very good. I'll be driving from Merida for Calakmul on Sunday and I'll be flying out the following Saturday afternoon. So I have 6 mornings at my disposal. It felt like a bit short to add one of those far-off sites on top of Calakmul and Palenque. I haven't...

Yucatan - Calakmul - Palenque in January

I'll arrive the 29th of December and go back the 14th of January. The first week will be casual birding on the east coast. The second week will be more focused on birding. I'll head down to Calakmul for 2-3 days and then onwards to Palenque for the rest of the stay. If this coincides with the...

    Yucatan and Belize

Maybe a bit late to bump this thread, but I just joined the forum. I was in Yucatan a couple of years ago and birded, among other places, Cozumel. Moped is definitely a fairly cheap option. It felt pretty safe on the road, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. One problem is that most...
