Identification

At 25.5 cm (10 ins), a medium-sized Laughingthrush1

  • Crown to nape rich rufescent mid-brown
  • Upperparts similar but more ochraceous and each feather tip has a black band and white spot
  • Tail brown with broad blackish-brown subterminal band and white tips
  • Wings brown with dark and white tips and grey wingpanel
  • Area around eye and eyestripe whitish
  • Chin and throat blackish
  • Underparts yellowish-brown with increasingly large white crescents

Similar Species

Similar to Barred Laughingthrush, but note white spots and black throat

Distribution

Poorly known. Old records are from north-western Yunnan and south-western Sichuan in Southern China,1 but many places were heavily logged over the years, and this species was not seen for quite a long time. It was last recorded in 1989 and then not rediscovered for almost 20 years, in 2008, in Muli county in Sichuan.3

Taxonomy

Clements2 treats this species as monotypic.

It has been treated as conspecific with Barred Laughingthrush and is also placed in the genus Ianthocincla.

Habitat

Seems to favour old mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest with plenty of lichen and moss and bamboo thickets.3 All records between 2500 - 4200m1.

Behaviour

Shy and skulking.3

Diet

Feeds on invertebrates and fruit.1

Breeding

No information about breeding.1
