Identification
18-22 cm. Similar to Claret-breasted Fruit Dove.
- White head and upper throat, more or less tinged with yellow
- Purplish crimson breast patch with extensive dark purple border
- Green underparts (duller than Claret-breasted Fruit Dove), often with a bluish or grey tinge.
- Yellow or greenish tip at bil, dull maroon at base
- Purplish red legs
Sexes similar. Juveniles have yellow fringes to feathers and little or no red on breast.
Distribution
Eastern Solomon Islands (San Cristóbal, Malaupaina and Ugi).
Moderately common in its restricted range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Sometimes treated as conspecific with Claret-breasted Fruit Dove. The subspecies vicinus and lewisii of Claret-breasted Fruit Dove are also sometimes considered subspecies of this species.
Forms a superspecies with Claret-breasted Fruit Dove.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests, hill and ridge forest. Often recorded in adjacent cultivated areas.
