Identification
28cm (11 inch)
Ground-dwelling dove with purplish-blue sheen on the back and a distinctive white forehead. Bill and legs reddish. Displays a peculiar balance of the neck and tail while walking.
Distribution
Endemic to the Dominican Republic. Highly endangered and on the verge of extinction.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It's considered conspecific by some authorities with Gray-fronted Quail-Dove.
Habitat
On Hispaniola the bird has been reported from 745 to 1,685 meters above sea level in the central mountain range and Sierra de Bahoruco in the Dominican Republic. It inhabits humid montane forests with abundant leaf litter. The destruction of suitable habitat in the central mountain range has led to its disappearance in that area leaving the Bahoruco mountain range as last refuge for this critical endangered bird.
