Identification

19-21 cm
Pale brown to grey back, rump and wings, black flight feathers, white below, white face with a black eye mask.

Distribution

Tristan da Cunha, Australia and New Zealand. North Atlantic colonies are on the Cape Verde Islands, Canary Islands and Savage Islands.

Taxonomy

It is the only member of monotypic genus, Pelagodroma.

  • Tristan da Cunha and Gough islands

Habitat

Open sea; breeds in rock crevices.

Behaviour

Breeding

They nest in colonies close to the sea in rock crevices; a single white egg is laid.

Diet

The diet includes planktonic food.
