Identification

23cm (9 in)

  • Orange forehead, crown and nape
  • Yellow face, neck sides and upper breast
  • White belly
  • Green upperparts
  • Reddish-brown eye with pink eye ring
  • Pinkish bill, legs and feet

Juveniles:

  • Apricot cap with dark flecks
  • White belly has yellow streaks
  • Brown eye with grey eyering

Distribution

Subspecies xanthomerius

South America: found in Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • P. l. xanthomerius (Black-legged): green tail and black feet
  • E Peru and n Bolivia to w Brazil south of the Amazon
  • P. l. xanthurus (Yellow-tailed: yellow tail, flanks and thighs
  • Brazil s of the Amazon (R. Purús and R. Juruá to R. Madeira)
  • P. l. leucogaster (Green-thighed) : Green upper tail and green thighs
  • N Brazil south of the Amazon (Rio Madeira to Maranhão)

Habitat

Humid tropical terra firme forests, especially seasonally flooded forests; also riverine woodland.rivers.

Behaviour

Diet

There is very little information available. They are known to eat fruit and petals.

Breeding

A single nest recorded at 30 m high in a tree, held two yellow eggs.
