Identification
11 cm (4¼ in)
Male
- Pale bluish-grey underparts (paler towards lower abdomen)
- Buffy-brown undertail-coverts
- Yellow bill with curved maxilla and large mandible
- White patch at base of primaries
Female: similar but dusky brown; dark bill
Distribution
South America: found in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Moist lowland Atlantic forests secondary woodland, forest edges, particularly with bamboo.
Behaviour
Nomadic.
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of bamboo seeds, with seeds of giant sedge from time to time and insects at intervals.
Breeding
The female constructs a cup-shaped nest.
