Identification
A very dark tinamou, blackish above, browner on wings, slaty grey on breast, grey-brown on remainder of underparts with darker barring on flanks and undertail. Bill dark above and yellow below, legs bright orange or red.
Length 25cm.
Distribution
Southern Mexico, from southern Veracruz and northern Oaxaca south, to northern Costa Rica. Resident.
Taxonomy
Nominate race occurs from southern Mexico to north Nicaragua and costaricensis from east Honduras to northern Costa Rica
Habitat
Dense undergrowth in humid forest. Shy and very difficult to see on the dark forest floor, more often heard than seen but has ventriloqual call making the bird very difficult to locate.
Behaviour
Voice: A drawn-out, hollow ah-wah with the second syllable downslurred.
