Identification

Green with a dark red belly, rump and tail-tip.

Distribution

Brazil and northern Bolivia.

Taxonomy

Falls within the Painted Parakeet (P. picta) complex, the taxonomy of which is undecided:[1] This taxon is recognised as a separate species by some authorities[2][4] but not by others[3][5].

Pyrrhura amazonum has three subspecies:[2]

  • P. a. amazonum
  • North-central Brazil (Pará, northern Mato Grosso, northern Goiás and Maranhão)
  • P. a. snethlage
  • Rio Madeira basin in southern Brazil and northern Bolivia - sometimes split as Madeira Parakeet
  • P. a. lucida in northern Mato Grosso, Brazil

Habitat

Humid lowland forest.

Behaviour

Diet includes seeds and flowers.

The nest is placed in a tree cavity.
