Salvadorina waigiuensis

Identification

38-43cm. Long body and tail, dark brown barred plumage, bright yellow bill, orange legs and chocolate-coloured head. Males have red irises while females have brown; otherwise sexes identical.

Habitat

Fast-flowing streams and alpine lakes between 500 and 3.700m in the mountains.

Behaviour

The diet includes aquatic invertebrates, tadpoles and small fish which are caught by diving and dabbling.

They build a nest, lined with down, hidden among bankside vegetation, or in tufts of grass. 2-4 eggs are laid and incubated for 28 days, probably by the female. 2-4 eggs are laid in
