Identification

A large (31cm.) pigeon with uniform grayish-purple plumage, slightly darker back than underparts. Iris whitish in adults of most subspecies, but dark maroon in the nominate group. Pink legs.

Distribution

Central and South America:
'Central America: found only in Panama
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

Taxonomy

Plumbeous Pigeon has previously been placed in genus Columba.

Subspecies

Six subspecies are recognized^[1]:

• P. p. chapmani:

• North-western Ecuador

• P. p. bogotensis:

• Lower slopes of the east side of the Andes from Venezuela south to Bolivia

• P. p. pallescens:

• Southeastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and southwest Amazonian Brazil

• P. p. wallacei:

• Guianas (and maybe easternmost Venezuela) and central Amazonian Brazil, north of the Amazon west to the Rio Negro

• P. p. baeri:

• Central Brazil (Goiás and north-western Minas Gerais)

• P. p. plumbea:

• South-eastern Brazil and Paraguay

bogotensis was formerly included in Ruddy Pigeon.

Habitat

Moist lowland and montane forests.

Behaviour

Usually is found in the canopy.
