Identification
17–22 cm (6¾-8¾ in)
- Black upperparts and head
- Scarlet underparts, tail edges, rump and wing patches
- Strong dark beak
- Long wings
Female is grey above, with yellow face and underparts, tail edges, rump and wing patches.
Distribution
Found in peninsular India and Sri Lanka.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly considered conspecific with Scarlet Minivet (with the scientific name Pericrocotus flammeus)
Habitat
Forests, including swamp forests and other well-wooded habitats and hill gardens.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists mostly of insects caught in trees or while perched. They use their wings to flush insects out of foliage.
Breeding
They weave small twigs with spiders web to form a cup-shaped nest. The clutch consists of 2-3 pale green eggs, incubated mostly by the female. Both adults tend the young.
