Pytilia afra

Identification

Length 12 cm.
Male: Grey crown and nape, crimson red face and upper throat, olive yellow back and wings, mid grey sides of neck, lower throat and upper breast, breast dark yellowish olive. White ventral area, white and black barring under tail. Upperparts and wings olive yellow. Primary and secondary wing feathers are orange-yellow. Upper tail feathers red. Bill red. Legs pale flesh.

Female: All grey head. Upper throat whitish with faint grey barring. Underparts grey tinged olive. Orange-yellow on the wing is duller than the male's. Bill dull red.

Distribution

Africa.

Taxonomy

Habitat

Grasslands with thickets and scrubs, forest edges and open woodland.

Behaviour

It feeds mainly on the ground, and its diet includes grass seeds and insects.

3-4 eggs are laid and are incubated by both parents for 12-13 days. The young fledge after 21 days, and are self sufficient 2 weeks after that, though they still may be fed by their parents after this time.
