Okarito Brown Kiwi - BirdForum Opus

Identification

Length: 50 cm

  • Long-billed
  • Short-legged
  • Tailless
  • Wingless
  • Dark greyish-brown
  • Streaked with reddish-brown and black
  • Greyer on head
  • Bill whitish to pinkish
  • Legs pale brownish

Distribution

Endemic to the Okarito Forest on the west coast of South Island, New Zealand.
Population estimated at about 3000 birds.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
It has long been considered conspecific with Southern Brown Kiwi and North Island Brown Kiwi.

A mainly nocturnal species.

Diet

Worms and insect larvae, fallen fruit.
