Identification

22 cm

  • Mainly black with large white spots
  • Rump and flanks chestnut
  • Forehead, face, throat and upper breast rufous
  • Hindclaw very long and straight
  • Bill elevated at base

Distribution

Local along Andes from Venezuela south to northern Peru.

Taxonomy

Subspecies[1]

Two subspecies are recognized:

  • A. o. orthonyx:
  • A. o. infuscatus:
  • Andes of eastern Ecuador and extreme north-western Peru (southern Amazonas)

Habitat

Cloud and temperate rainforest and elfin forest, often near bamboo.

Behaviour

Diet

Diet includes both arthropods and plant material.
