Identification
12-13 cm.
- Long, straight bill
- Orange throat, breast and belly
- Central tail feathers are elongated and tipped white
Female with shorter wings and bill, juvenile has ochraceous feather margins on upperparts.
Similar species
Koepcke's Hermit is larger and has a dark brown throat with whitish malar and gular stripes.
Distribution
West Brazil (south of river Amazon to west bank or River Tapajós), north Bolivia and east Peru.
Locally common.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Closely related to Koepcke's Hermit and replacing it at lower elevations. Sometimes placed in genus Ametrornis in the past.
Habitat
Found in lowland rainforest, terra firme, várzea, plantations and bamboo thickets. Usually in the understorey.
Occurs up to 325 m.

Diet
Feeds on nectar and small arthropods, using trap-lining strategy.
Breeding
Birds in breeding condition recorded in June, July and September. The nest is attached to the inner side of a leaf tip. No other information.
