Identification
45cm. A small hornbill with a ridged lower mandible.
Male
- Creamy-white head and underparts
- Black ear-coverts and throat
- Black wings and upperparts with metallic sheen
- Yellowish-brown tail with black base and tip
- Horn-coloured bill and low casque, blackish-brown at base of upper mandible, lower mandible with brown ridges
- Bluish-white skin around eye and on throat
Female
- Smaller than male
- Black plumage
- Blue skin around eye and on throat
Distribution
Endemic to the southern Philippines (Mindanao, Basilan, Dinagat and Siargao)
Still found in remaining large tracts of forest on Mindanao. Dinagat almost completely deforested and species very rare there.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies recognized:
- P. a. affinis - Mindanao Tarictic Hornbill on Sarangani and Mindanao
- P. a. basilanica - Basilan Tarictic Hornbill on Basilan
Samar Hornbill is sometimes included in this species. All species of this genus on the Philippines were formerly considered conspecific as Tarictic Hornbill.
Habitat
Primary evergreen forest up to 900m.
Behaviour
Feeds on fruit, seeds, beetles and lizards.
Usually seen in pairs or small flocks.
Little known about breeding.
