22–23 cm (8½-9 in)

  • Yellowish-white upperparts
  • Crimson band across upper back
  • Crimson forehead and crown
  • Purplish-pink spots forming breast patch
  • Purple vent

Female: mostly green upperparts, grey underparts. Crimson forehead patch, yellow vent.

Distribution

Endemic to Polynesia: found in Melanesia, Samoa Islands, Fiji, Tonga

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • P. p. perousii:
Samoa (Savai'i, Upolu, Tutuila, Ofu and Tau)
  • P. p. mariae:
Fiji and Tonga

Habitat

They are found in the canopy. Pine plantations on the edge of rainforest.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists entirely of fruit.

Breeding

Their frail twiggy nest is a platform usually placed high in a tree.
