Identification

50cm.

  • Green plumage
  • Black lower cheeks
  • Purple blue crown
  • Black lores
  • Grey blue-lavender throat, breast, abdomen and under-wing coverts
  • Yellow green thighs and vent with blue edged feathers
  • Green tail feathers, edged blue
  • Pale yellow iris
  • Male - red upper mandible, yellow tipped; black lower mandible
  • Female all-black bill

Juvenile

  • Green crown
  • Orange red bill
  • Dark iris until they are 2-3 years old

Distribution

India and parts of China.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Mountain forests of pine and oak.

Behaviour

The diet includes fruits, berries, seeds, and leaf buds.

They nest in tree holes and 2-4 eggs are laid and incubated for 23 days. The young fledge 8-9 weeks later.
