Identification

In flight shows wings all white with just three outer primaries black (from both above and below).

In flight, compare with White-crowned Lapwing

Distribution

Central, Eastern and Southern Africa.

Taxonomy

Subspecies1

  • V. c. crassirostris - S Sudan to e Zaire, n Malawi and w Angola
  • V. c. leucopterus - Tanzania to Zaire, Angola, n Botswana and ne South Africa

Habitat

Lakes, ponds and marshes with floating vegetation.

Behaviour

Diet includes insects, invertebrates and small crustaceans.
