Identification

Size 33–37 cm (13-14½ in)
All green, bill red, blue around eyes, white throat.

Similar Species

Similar species are found in Colombia like Aulacorhynchus prasinus, the Emerald Toucanet.

Distribution

Northern Venezuela, Sierra de San Luis in Falcón State, Coast Mountain range of Aragua, Carabobo, Distrito Capital, Vargas state, Interior Mountain range of Miranda and Guarico State, Mountain of Sucre and Monagas, Caripe. Endemic of Venezuela.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Three subspecies recognized[1]:

  • A. s. calorhynchus: in the Santa Marta Mts. (northeast Colombia) and Sierra de Perijá (western Venezuela) - sometimes accepted as full species, Yellow-billed Toucanet
  • A. s. sulcatus: in the coastal cordillera of northern Venezuela (Falcón to Miranda)
  • A. s. erythrognathus: Mountains of north-eastern Venezuela


Habitat

Humid forest and transition forest; upper tropical to 1600 meters above sea level; subtropical to 2600 meters above sea level.

Behaviour

They move inside the forest. Always on top of tree. Mostly we can find with more than 5 individuals. Are aggressive with other species for territory. Very common, but restricted only at north Venezuela.

Diet

They eat eggs, small birds, fruit.

Vocalisation

Is very silent, but sometime they call for territory.
