Identification

32–35 cm (12½-13¾ in)

  • Bluish head
  • Body brown and green

Distribution

Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Hong Kong
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.

  • P. v. marshallorum:
  • P. v. magnificus:
  • Eastern Nepal to central Assam
  • P. v. clamator (mayri):
  • North-eastern Assam, northern Burma, south-western China (western Yunnan) and north-western Thailand
  • P. v. virens (indochinensis):

Habitat

Montane groves and light forests with large trees.

Behaviour

Diet

A wide variety of fruits berries plums etc, especially fond of figs.
