Psilopogon chrysopogon

Includes Gold-faced Barbet

Identification

30 cm (11¾ in)
Large size, strong blackish bill, broad blackish-brown eyestripe, large yellow patch on lower sides of head and pale greyish-buff throat with narrow blue border

Distribution

South-east Asia: found in Indochina, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.

The taxon may be split into 2 species as follows: "Gold-whiskered Barbet" (strict sense), P. chrysopogon (subspecies chrysopogon, laetus) and "Gold-faced Barbet", P. chrysopsis (chrysopsis). These forms show deep molecular divergence but reference [5] suggests vocal and plumage differences are minor.

Subspecies

Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:

  • P. c. laetus: "Gold-whiskered Barbet. South-western Thailand and Malay Peninsula; possibly extreme southern Burma
  • P. c. chrysopogon: "Gold-whiskered Barbet. Sumatra
  • P. c. chrysopsis: "Gold-faced Barbet". Borneo

Habitat

Lowland evergreen forest, swamp and evergreen forests and forest clearings.

Behaviour

Diet

As they feed mostly in the canopy, little is known about their diet, but they have been observed feeding on palm fruits, figs and berries; it is thought they eat insects too as they have been seen pecking into dead wood.
