Identification
Variation: wide red on belly is a sign of the subspecies rhodeogaster.
Distribution
Africa: found in eastern Sudan, western and central Ethiopian highlands, western Kenya and northern Tanzania.
Taxonomy
Some authorities place this species in Chloropicus.
Subspecies
Dendropicos spodocephalus has two subspecies:[1]
- D. s. rhodeogaster
- D. s. spodocephalus
This species was in the past considered a subspecies of African Grey Woodpecker.
Habitat
Highland forest.
