[edit] Overview

This is quite far north in Thailand, on the border with Burma (Myanmar). It is a mountain ridge, stretching for some 40km from west of Thaton to Doi Pha Hom Pok- Thailand's 2nd highest peak, at 2285m.

Until fairly recently, there were major restrictions on access caused by occasional border disputes. Now, you just 'sign in' at the first army checkpoint, usually helped by a smiling soldier with no English.

It is fast becoming one of the places that is de rigeur for birders visiting the far north.

[edit] Access and Facilities

Most birders stay in Thaton, a pleasant town on the Mekong River, with a range of hotels. The northernmost route starts in the town and takes about 45 minutes from there to the dead-end, where the road has collapsed.
