Identification

14cm. A small, slender tanager with a strong bill and a contrasting head.

Male

  • Dark chestnut head and throat
  • Small black rounding mask
  • Rest of plumage dark grey, underparts slightly paler than upperparts

Female

  • Much duller than male
  • Brownish-olive above
  • Dull rufous crown and nape
  • Buff lores and chin
  • Dull greyish-buff throat and underparts

Immature males similar to females.

Distribution

South America: found from eastern Paraguay, to south-eastern Brazil and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
Uncommon to fairly common.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].
Has been placed in the genus Pyrrhocoma in the past.

Habitat

Found in bamboo thickets, dense undergrowth of forest, second growth and shrubbery along forest borders.
Occurs from sea-level up to 1400m.

Behaviour

Feeds on insects.
Usually seen in pairs or family groups. Does generally not join mixed-species flocks.
An inconspicuous and difficult to see species.
Few information about breeding.
