The Emberizidae are a large family of passerine birds. They are seed-eaters, as evidenced by possessing relatively large, strong bills. In Europe, they are typically called buntings, but in North America, family members are known as Sparrows. However, the North American Sparrows are not closely related to the Old World Sparrows, which are in family Passeridae.

Emberizidae is a family in the order Passeriformes.

Taxonomic classification of this family is changing, particularly with South American birds, which may be moved to the tanager family.
