  • Dark, brownish-black back
  • Yellow eye
  • Red eye-ring
  • Pinkish-white legs

Similar Species

Similar to the Black Oystercatcher of the Northern Pacific coast.

Distribution

Breeds from northern Peru to Tierra del Fuego and Falkland Islands; winters to Uruguay.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Rocky shores.

Behaviour

Diet

The main diet consists of shellfish.

Breeding

It nests on the ground or on rocks.
