Identification
34–36 cm. A medium-sized wader, which is slightly larger and longer-legged than the Eurasian Woodcock.

Confusion Species
Can be told from the Eurasian Woodcock by the overall browner coloration and the pinkish bare skin behind the eye, as well as the choice of habitat.
Distribution
Asia: Endemic to Japan, found on few southern Japanese islands: Amami-O-Shima Island, Tokuno-Shima Island, Okinawa Island, and Tokashiki-Shima Island
Taxonomy
- This is a monotypic species[1].
- This taxon is considered a subspecies of Scolopax rusticola (sensu lato) by some authors[2]
- Sometimes considered conspecific within Eurasian Woodcock (citation needed).

Little is known. Ground feeders, probing into soft earth in forests and in short grass along roadsides.
