Bird safe water purificaiton for fountain to prevent algae

I have a decorative fountain that is prone to algae growth - it has no visible basin, the water runs up and over three columns. Several birds -Doves, Mockingbirids and Cardinals mostly - have taken to my fountain as a water source. Is there a "bird safe" additive that I can use to prevent...

Comment by 'Judybird' in media 'Great Egret in Spring'

Alan, ha - great comment about the natural habitat. I hesitated posting this with the million dollar condo in the background but that's Sarasota. I was on a dock so I didn't have much opportunity to move around. Thanks for viewing. Judy

    Migration for Ruby's started????

Yippee! Two hummers spotted in my butterfly garden late yesterday afternoon in SW Florida. These were the first bummers I've seen all year. They visited my Firespike, Firecracker and Red Penta plants. I planted a Hoolmskadia (sp?) - Chinese Hat Plant/Purple - last year that they are supposed...

    Raccoons and Armadillos

I live just south of you - My guess is raccoons. I hung a wind chime and heard them one evening, about 10 pm. I looked out withe a flashlight and I saw Mama raccoon hanging over the shepherds hook with a hand/paw on each end of my feeder. She was dumping out the seed through the feeder holes...

Florida Butterflies - where are they all?

Update... The butterflies are finally appearing more often. Today I had a Queen and Gulf Fritillary on the Royal Red Butterfly Bush at the same time. I've noticed more Sulphers and Peacocks in nearby Sarasota too. My milkweeds have had some caterpillars but none have made it butterfly - I...

Florida Butterflies - where are they all?

We seem to be missing the beauties this year...I completed my new butterfly garden last fall and had many visitors right away. In addition to this dedicated 30 x 15 ft bed, I have butterfly plants throughout my landscape inclduing host plants. In the fall, I had plenty of butterfly visitors of...

    Driving snake away

Thanks - I like the stinky stuff idea. At this point, the baby birds are gone, the snake is still around. My neighbor is not opposed to catching it, he just can't. Those racers are quick buggers. Someone else suggested a snake guard on the bottom of the tree and I've passed on that suggestion...

thank you Linda, I am forwarding your comments to my neighbor. We fear the first brood is gone but the cardinals are still hanging around. Perhaps this will help the next babies. Judy

I posted this above in Birds & Birding. I'll ask the reptile experts... Any suggestions for driving a snake away from a Cardinals nest?... (I don't think St. Patrick is still doing this)... My neighbor has a nest just outside their pool cage. Mama Cardinal is sitting on eggs and a Black...
