Collins Bird Guide 2nd Ed; Reviewed

You should look at Ridgely and Greenfield Birds of Ecuador. Colours by crayola and some of the flattest, poorest bird art I've ever seen. £40 to boot! Just got my Collins 2nd Ed. Overall very pleased with it especially the gulls and owls - I love the new adult Tawny Owl painting, exactly like...

    Waterproof boots?

FOUR pairs in 12 years! Ye Gods, I'm not sure that's a recommendation! Two pairs in the past 12 years and I spend a great deal of time in very testing field conditions. My current pair are Altberg Norway boots, made to measure and excellent value. Utterly waterproof, very supportive.

    Wiltshire Birders?????

Certasinly under-represented on the net, I agree but at least there's a county society website.

What's a good guide to European waders?

DVDs hadn't occured to me, I must say. I shall put the Waders DVD on my birthday list although i can imagine what SWMBO will say! My only frustation with the Collins Guide is that I'd like a bit more text at times, especially concerning behaviour otherwise, yes, an utterly excellent book and...

What's a good guide to European waders?

I've only recently returned to serious birding after a 30 year lay-off and, although I spent much of my youth gazing at waders, I'm struggling at present and would be grateful for suggestions for a good wader specific guide. I've looked at Black's, NHBS and Subbuteo's websites but they're all...

    Gwent birding

None I'm afraid; it was rather windy so i wouldn't be surprised if they weren't keeping their heads down.

    Gwent birding

Whilst my wife was at a meeting in St Mellons yesterday, I spent a few hours at Peterstone Wentlooge. I didn't pick the best state of tide as it retreated into the distance. Lots of shelduck, curlew and oystercatchers. The most interesting bird I saw was an Albino Lapwing; never seen such a...

    Window Clamp for Spotting scope

    Bob, what tripod is that?

New Swarovski zoom scope & eye piece.

Jeff, I entirely support your stance about honesty but I think the point I was trying to make was that you're not exactly impartial in this matter. You work for the US importers of Leica scopes and you're telling us that the Leica is tops.... However I commend you on sticking up for what you...

    Hawke ED focus traction?

It'll depend on whether you get mullered for Import Duty. HMRC tend to notice packages from North America once they get over £50 or so.....:C

New Swarovski zoom scope & eye piece.

Bearing in mind your location, you can just pop down the road to Wattens and pick one these things up from the factory gate!;)

    Bins for a ton

They're slightly over the ton but I'm very pleased with my Bushnell Excursion 8x42s. They produce a far better image than my father's Opticron Countryman which cost £80 more. Excellent field of view and very good VFM. Shop around for them as prices vary enormously and given your extensive...

New Swarovski zoom scope & eye piece.

I think it's called taking the p###! Still I'm sure there's already a waiting list of people who absolutely must have the latest and best. I'll content myself with buying one of their secondhand scopes...
