Collins Bird Guide 2nd Ed; Reviewed

You should look at Ridgely and Greenfield Birds of Ecuador. Colours by crayola and some of the flattest, poorest bird art I've ever seen. £40 to boot! Just got my Collins 2nd Ed. Overall very pleased with it especially the gulls and owls - I love the new adult Tawny Owl painting, exactly like...

    Waterproof boots?

FOUR pairs in 12 years! Ye Gods, I'm not sure that's a recommendation! Two pairs in the past 12 years and I spend a great deal of time in very testing field conditions. My current pair are Altberg Norway boots, made to measure and excellent value. Utterly waterproof, very supportive.

    Wiltshire Birders?????

Certasinly under-represented on the net, I agree but at least there's a county society website.

What's a good guide to European waders?

DVDs hadn't occured to me, I must say. I shall put the Waders DVD on my birthday list although i can imagine what SWMBO will say! My only frustation with the Collins Guide is that I'd like a bit more text at times, especially concerning behaviour otherwise, yes, an utterly excellent book and...

What's a good guide to European waders?

I've only recently returned to serious birding after a 30 year lay-off and, although I spent much of my youth gazing at waders, I'm struggling at present and would be grateful for suggestions for a good wader specific guide. I've looked at Black's, NHBS and Subbuteo's websites but they're all...

    Gwent birding

None I'm afraid; it was rather windy so i wouldn't be surprised if they weren't keeping their heads down.

    Gwent birding

Whilst my wife was at a meeting in St Mellons yesterday, I spent a few hours at Peterstone Wentlooge. I didn't pick the best state of tide as it retreated into the distance. Lots of shelduck, curlew and oystercatchers. The most interesting bird I saw was an Albino Lapwing; never seen such a...

    Window Clamp for Spotting scope

    Bob, what tripod is that?

New Swarovski zoom scope & eye piece.

Jeff, I entirely support your stance about honesty but I think the point I was trying to make was that you're not exactly impartial in this matter. You work for the US importers of Leica scopes and you're telling us that the Leica is tops.... However I commend you on sticking up for what you...

    Hawke ED focus traction?

It'll depend on whether you get mullered for Import Duty. HMRC tend to notice packages from North America once they get over £50 or so.....:C

Don't you have to pay for advertising space on this Forum?

New Swarovski zoom scope & eye piece.

Bearing in mind your location, you can just pop down the road to Wattens and pick one these things up from the factory gate!;)

    Bins for a ton

They're slightly over the ton but I'm very pleased with my Bushnell Excursion 8x42s. They produce a far better image than my father's Opticron Countryman which cost £80 more. Excellent field of view and very good VFM. Shop around for them as prices vary enormously and given your extensive...

New Swarovski zoom scope & eye piece.

I think it's called taking the p###! Still I'm sure there's already a waiting list of people who absolutely must have the latest and best. I'll content myself with buying one of their secondhand scopes...

Are Zen Rays 8x43 ED's really that good?

This "catch-up" is no bad thing. The Teutonic manufacturers are not going to go out of business overnight but cheaper, high-quality competition is certainly going to make them look to their laurels especially in terms of any temptation to overprice their products. I don't know what it's like...

    Tilley Hats.. Comments please

Very overpriced and more than a bit poncey in my personal opinion and that's coming from someone who is a habitual hat wearer being somewhat thin on top. Decathlon do a brilliant wide brimmed UV proof hat for a quarter of the price of a Tilley. Washable too!

    Gwent birding

Luke, Thank you very much, I look forward to birding in Gwent. Can't say I get very excited about hybrid ducks, can't see what the fuss is about myself but then I wouldn't describe myself as a die-hard twitcher by any means.

    Gwent birding

I've promised to drive my wife over to a meeting at the business park at St Mellon towards the end of March, and have got the rest of the day off. What's the Peterstone Wentlooge area like for birding? It looks promising. Cheers

Nimrod Pack Systems' Binotopia Chest Harness

They use non-standard buckles, but you can buy a set for $6, so no problem there. I had no idea they did green, I would have asked for that colour because although I do wear camo (Shadowgrass), the little fleecey Bino-top is a bit OTT in camo. The website isn't the most helpful I've ever met...

Nimrod Pack Systems' Binotopia Chest Harness

I cannot use a normal neck strap for binos due to some very interesting curves in my cervical vertebrae due to poor posture. Three weeks ago I took the plunge and ordered the Binotopia chest harness kit from Nimrod Pack Systems based in Cashmere, WA. I bought the Binotopia kit which included...

    Arsonists attack Maltese Reserve

Can I suggest that all us citizens of the EU take a few minutes to write to our local MEP to express our outrage at the situation in Malta, a recently aceeded state, and ask what the EU and the European Commission are doing about it?

Japanese Optics - Price Increases On The Way

There seems very little logic in jacking prices up in a recession. I can only assume that Japanese optic companies wish to see their turnover in the UK and Eurozone dwindle even further. I wonder if, in a year or so, when UK exchange rates are returned to something near historical levels...

    North American Bird Guide.

The companion volume to the Sibley field guide is really good with it's extended discussions of families and species accompanied by some marvellous little illustrations of habitat and behaviour. A proper bed-time birdbook!

    North American Bird Guide.

I use Sibley whenever we're in the Land of the Maple Leaf. It's very very good. The main drawback is the bulk of the original book but recently Knopf have brought out slimmer eastern and western North America editions. We bought one this summer as a thank you to our friends in Alberta and I...
