Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu)

Feeding on scattered birdseed. Ranging from the American Southwest to northern Argentina, this is the South Texan subspecies "P. t. angulatus." Formerly considered a member of the Old World Pig family (Suidae) but now elevated to their own family, "Tayassuidae," the Javelinas. A recent study suggests this unique large-headed species deserves to be in its own genus "Dicotyles." This arrangement has been accepted by the American Society of Mammalogists but not by the IUCN. Formerly placed in the genus "Tayassu."
