Deceased chicks in Eastern Bluebird nest box (1 Viewer)

Hello - had a tragedy here with my first brood of the season. All of the hatchings have passed. There were 4 hatchlings originally but I only see 3 now. I have not seen the parents in a few days. I normally have at least 3 rounds of babies every year but this is my first full casualty. Should I try to remove the chicks or will parents eventually take care of it when they want to use the box again. The chicks were only a few days old.

Welcome to Birdforum.

In the UK it’s illegal to interfere with a nest, and I think it may be the same in the USA. It would be best to leave the chicks.

Tragically, I had the same experience with my eastern bluebird nesting box last week. The weather was wet and cold in the evenings and the babies perished. The parents have abandoned this nesting box and are already building a fresh nest in new nesting box. I have removed the dead babies and the old nest (with maggots). Then I hosed the nesting box; sprayed it with a 10:1 ratio of water and bleach; let it sit 10 minutes; rinsed thoroughly; and left it open to dry. Another bird is now setting up a nest in this revived nesting box.
