Raven keeps pinching them from the nest boxes when I spotted the B/S Kite sitting quietly on the dead fir tree just above my head.     I wanted flight photos and waited quite a long time watching this bird at rest before he/she finally cooperated. They hunt mice when our lake bed dries out in the summer. Autumn rains are late coming and we still have no water.

    Suddenly Ken spotted a white blob in a distant tree, so I took a picture to see if that helped with the ID, and it confirmed his thoughts that it was a Black-shouldered Kite. Giving me yet another Life bird! "Black and white" doesn't really do him justice though, does it. He's stunning.

    Notice the tail hanging down from the branch! I'll be off-line for a few days. Tomorrow we fly to Cairns and drive to Possum Valley http://www.possumvalley.com.au/ (Blackbean Cottage). It's set in the Atherton Tablelands in rainforest and the cabin deck overlooks a platypus pond. Well...
