A black swift, right where it was supposed to be, right behind a waterfall in Banff National Park, Alberta Canada last August 2023. There were numerous signs at the trailhead advising visitors to stay on the trail because the area was a known nesting area for the threatened/endangered swift. Having never seen one, I left my ailing hiking partners behind to reach a large waterfall a couple of miles upstream in a steep and narrow canyon that looked like a possible nesting site. Sure enough, a black swift flew out from behind the water, down the stream, and returned to disappear behind the waterfall. How cool was that!

Haven't done real birding for some time. A trip to Texas solved that. Whooping Crane. Lifer, but I have no idea what number it is because I'm too lazy to update my spreadsheet. Crappy shots due to distance--my little Sony RX10 has its limitations. What an awesome bird. A Sandhill as a side dish. Hope to see an Aplomado Falcon this trip.

My first lifer of the year was Black-capped Petrel from Ponta do Sol, Santo Antao, Cape Verde on 3rd February. (One of five sightings from northern Santo Antao over a five day period. A small number of individuals appears to be present on the island.) A WP tick this morning was Scaly-breasted Munia from the Sado Estuary, Zambujal, Portugal.

All the best

Paul

Ring Billed Gull yesterday at the Hayle Estuary. Not a sociable lapwing unfortunately but nice to knock off a bird thats always at the top of the 'most common bird you haven't seen' lists for me. Big Thanks to Amy Schwartz for really grilling common gulls and getting it head down on white feather pattern
